Materials and electronic components that control electrical signals, forming the basis of computer chips and other devices.
Chip production involves design and highly controlled manufacturing steps that form tiny patterns and structures on wafers. Finished chips are separated, packaged and tested. Different firms can design chips, manufacture them, supply production equipment or assemble and test them. The industry therefore contains several linked businesses, and a shortage at one stage can affect finished products elsewhere.
Imagine a hypothetical car plant with parts for 1,000 vehicles except for a particular control chip, of which only 800 are available. If each car needs one and no approved substitute exists, that chip limits completion to 800 vehicles even if steel and engines are plentiful. Expanding supply requires compatible production and testing, not simply replacing it with any chip bearing the semiconductor label. This demonstrates how a small component can constrain a much larger product.
