A facility housing servers, networking and supporting power and cooling systems.
Computing equipment uses electricity and releases heat. Reliable operation therefore depends on adequate power, cooling and network connectivity as well as working servers. Backup supplies, duplicate equipment and recovery arrangements can reduce some failure risks. The facility's design and the application's design both matter: a well-equipped building cannot make a service resilient if a critical software dependency has no alternative.
Imagine a retailer hosting its website and order database in one hypothetical facility. Backup power keeps servers running through a short mains outage. However, a damaged external network link can still stop customers reaching the website if there is no alternate connection. Copying the database to another location might preserve information, but restoring order-taking also requires working software, routing and a tested recovery process. These are separate tasks.
