Radio Jamaica reports a larger net reserve balance, with borrowed foreign funds contributing to the increase.
Radio Jamaica reports that Jamaica’s reached US$7.2 billion in September. The measure tracks reserve assets against short-term foreign liabilities.
Reserves help authorities meet external payment needs. Their usefulness depends on availability, composition and the liabilities they must support.
The report attributes much of the movement to foreign assets linked to government borrowing. A larger reserve balance does not, by itself, establish greater national wealth.
Borrowing can bring foreign into the financial system while creating an obligation elsewhere. Both sides matter when assessing the wider public balance sheet.
