US regulators have doubled the asset ceiling for the extended examination cycle, retaining capital, management, rating and risk requirements.
The Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC have announced an interim final rule raising the asset ceiling for an extended on-site bank examination cycle from US$3 billion to US$6 billion.
The September 10, 2026 announcement implements a provision of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. It expands the size category that may qualify for an 18-month cycle instead of the usual 12-month interval.
Qualifying institutions must be , well managed and well rated, with a low-risk profile. Those conditions remain part of the longer-cycle framework alongside the increased asset threshold.
Off-site supervision continues between on-site examinations.
Parallel provisions apply to eligible US branches of foreign banks.
The interim final rule takes effect on Federal Register publication, with a 30-day comment period afterward.
