Visitors who stay in the destination, as defined by its tourism statistics, rather than merely transiting or visiting by cruise for the day.
Arrival statistics group recorded visits by characteristics such as date, port of entry and country of residence. One person can create more than one arrival by taking separate trips. The figures can be influenced by access, travel demand and the reporting period. To understand a change, compare like periods and inspect the statistical definitions rather than combining categories that may have different coverage.
Imagine that 100 visitors arrive for overnight stays in one week, while a cruise ship brings 300 passengers for a daytime visit. Under these simplified categories, the destination records 100 stopover arrivals and 300 cruise arrivals, not 400 stopover arrivals. If ten of the overnight visitors return on separate trips later in the year, those later visits can add arrivals without adding ten new unique people.
